Died January 23, 2018 at Camp Hill Veterans’ Memorial Building, Halifax, Nova Scotia, age 98.  Born at Tyne Valley, PEI, he was the son of Arthur Wesley and Fannie Isabelle (Brown) Milligan.  He was educated at Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, where he was the Governor-General’s silver medalist in 1939; at Dalhousie University, Halifax (Dipl.Eng., BSc, MSc); and at Harvard University, Boston, Mass. (AM, PhD).  A veteran of the Second World War, he served in England, as meteorological officer with HQ 1 Cdn Corps in Italy and the Netherlands.  From 1950 until 1957 he served as a geologist with the provincial Department of Mines and Natural Resources in Northern Manitoba, and, between 1962 and 1967 did similar work in the highlands of Cape Breton for the Province of Nova Scotia.  From 1957 to 1985 he taught in the Geology Department of Dalhousie and was that department’s advisor to undergraduate students. The  student lounge in the Life Sciences Building, Dalhousie University was named in his honour in recognition of his dedication to undergraduates. Professor Milligan was Assistant Dean of Science from 1988 to 1990 when he retired.  Prior to the amalgamation of the armed services, he was also Officer Commanding the Dalhousie-King’s Contingent of the Canadian Officers Training Corps. He was a life member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia, and of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, a Fellow of the Geological Association of Canada, and a former president of the Nova Scotian Institute of Science. He was a volunteer with UNICEF Canada, the Dartmouth Food Bank, the Nova Scotia Museum and with Scientists in the Schools. He is survived by his daughter, Marlene Davis; daughter Betty Ann Aaboe-Milligan and her husband Kim; and his son Jayar Milligan and his wife Jenny; 5 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren.  He was predeceased by his wife, Roberta Elsie (Hayes); his brother Harold; his son-in-law Derek Davis and his granddaughter, Laerke Aaboe.  A Memorial Service will be held at King’s College Chapel at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018 with a reception following.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Geology Dept., Dalhousie University c/o Norma Keeping or to a charity of your choice.
